What to know

  • Include the transfer fee in the amount to repay.
  • Divide the balance by the months available before the offer ends.
  • Check the post-promotion APR and rules for new purchases.

Calculate the balance after fees

Read the transfer fee, any minimum charge, eligible transfers, and the time allowed to complete a transfer. A promotional offer may not cover every transaction. The credit limit you receive may also be less than the amount you hoped to move.

Add the fee to the transfer amount if it will be charged to the new account. That total is the starting point for your repayment plan. Compare the fee with the interest you expect to avoid, using a realistic payoff schedule on the existing card.

Build the payment around the deadline

For a true 0% promotional APR scenario, divide the amount to repay by the number of monthly payments available before expiration. Leave some margin for processing timing and unexpected expenses. The required minimum payment may be much smaller than the amount needed to finish within the promotion.

Check what happens if payments are late and what rate applies to an unpaid balance after the promotion. A deferred-interest offer has different consequences from a standard introductory APR. Read the actual disclosure rather than relying on the phrase “no interest.”

Avoid rebuilding the debt

Consider using the transfer card only for the repayment plan. New purchases may have different rates and grace-period effects. Meanwhile, moving debt off an old card can create available credit that is tempting to use again.

If the proposed payment is not sustainable, compare alternatives before applying. A different loan structure, a revised household budget, or a conversation with a reputable credit counselor may be more useful than moving the same balance repeatedly. No educational estimate guarantees approval.

MAKE IT CONCRETE

An illustrative payoff target

A $6,000 transfer with a 3% fee starts at $6,180. Paying it off across 18 equal monthly payments at a true 0% APR requires about $343.34 per month. Pay slightly more or earlier to allow for timing. These are example terms, not an available offer.

Your next-step checklist

  • Read transfer eligibility and deadlines.
  • Include the fee in the payoff target.
  • Schedule a sustainable payment.
  • Review purchases and post-promotion APR terms.
